I don’t get it. I spent some time the other day looking up funny or pithy quotes on revenge and all I got were quotes on how revenge is bad. And the best revenge is living well, drivel like that. Revenge is a great way to deal with anger.
If revenge is so bad, why do so many people, religions, national groups and nations spend so much time wreaking revenge? And don’t get me started on movies with revenge as the basic plot. Here’s a short list:
- Out for Revenge
- Friday the 13th
- Ben Hur
- Straw Dogs
- Kill Bill
- Once Upon a Time in the West
- The Virgin Spring
- The Godfather
- Death Wish
- 9 to 5
- Cousin Bette
- She Devil
- Fatal Attraction
- Heavenly Creatures
- The Quick and the Dead
- Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion
- The First Wives Club
- Waiting to Exhale
- The Godfather
- Dirty Harry
- Thelma and Louise
- The War of the Roses
I’m sure there are MANY more, but you don’t really want to read a list with a 100 movies on it.
So, my point is, if we are so obsessed with revenge, why can’t I find a few quotes on revenge that say how satisfying it is? Here is a sample of these annoying type quotes:
“Revenge is a confession of pain” – Latin Proverb quotes
“An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind.” – Mahatma Ghandi
“There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness.” – Josh Billings quotes
Ok, that’s enough of that. Yeah, yeah, I know, these sentiments are our highest ideals, but they are not the reality of our lives. See the movies list above, and think about the people you know.
No one even has a sense of humor about revenge – come on, almost everything has a funny side to it.
“It [revenge] is sweeter far than flowing honey.” – Homer
The revenge hamster, heh, heh
