I’m sorry, I try to keep the tone of this blog light, but sometimes reality creeps in and I cannot ignore it.  Chris Hedges is a journalist with a conscience and has experienced the reality of war.  I am placing a link to his latest article.  It is the least I can do.

The article is titled: No Other Way Out and is posted on Truthdig website. Don’t read it if hearing about the deaths our war machine causes on the other side of the world upsets you.  These words are hard to read.

“I have watched mothers and fathers keening in grief over the frail corpses of their children in hospitals in Gaza and rural villages in El Salvador, Bosnia and Kosovo. The faces of these dead children, their bodies ripped apart by iron fragments or bullets tumbling end over end through their small, delicate frames, appear to me almost daily like faint and sadly familiar ghosts. The frailty and innocence of my own children make these images difficult to bear.”

” These wars have taken hundreds of thousands of lives. They have pushed millions into refugee or displacement camps. They have left young men and women severely crippled and maimed. They have turned our nation into an isolated pariah, fueling the very terrorism we seek to defeat. And they cannot be won. The sooner we leave Iraq and Afghanistan the sooner we will save others and finally save ourselves.”

I’ll leave you with a song I grew up with, although I was nearly 20 when it was written and being heard on the radio, by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong (1969). If you are too young to remember it, you should look it up on the internet and listen to it.

War! huh-yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh

War! huh-yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y’all
Nothing
War! huh good God
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

Ohhh? War! I despise
Because it means destruction?
Of innocent lives

War means tears
to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
and lose their lives

I said – War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord …
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
War! It’s an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind

War has caused unrest in the younger generation
Induction then destruction-
Who wants to die?

Ohhh? War Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Uh-huh Yeah – Huh!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! It’s got one friend, that’s the undertaker
War has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can’t give life, it can only take it away

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord …
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
Peace Love and Understanding;
tell me, is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there’s got to be a better way

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
You tell me
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it.

Nothing

What else is there to say? hamster out.
